Introduction

In recent months, ChatGPT has been the hottest topic on the Internet due to its capability to perform a wide range of tasks, including but not limited to creative writing, language translation, and code generation. Surprisingly, it can even pass the exams in law and business schools.

Feel excited? All of us will be sacked at some point in the future.

Anyway, as humans, we should fight until the end. There is still some time before the end of the world. So why not we make use of our greatest rival, ChatGPT, to help us secure employment first? At least, we don’t have to lose life due to hunger.

Create a resume that fits your ideal job’s needs?

Yes, ChatGPT can certainly generate a resume from zero for the ideal candidate. However, 99.9% of us do not have such “ideal” qualifications and work experience. So don’t be naive.

Furthermore, the resumes generated by ChatGPT usually require additional customization to make them more visually appealing and tailored to specific jobs. Simply copying and pasting the entire job advertisement will result in a generic resume that may not be useful, just like the followings.

I requested ChatGPT to create a resume by utilizing the information from an investment bank job advertisement. The outcome was fair, however, it mainly involved restructuring and rewording the advertisement rather than providing a personalized representation of my skills and experience.

3 Tips to Enhance Your Resume using ChatGPT

Typically, we already have a resume on hand and are seeking ways to make it stand out to the hiring managers and HR professionals of our desired companies.

Here are three methods to enhance your resume with the assistance of ChatGPT, not including language and grammar checks which can be done easily with Microsoft Word or online grammar checkers.

  1. Keyword Optimization

  2. Work Achievements Descriptions

  3. Summarization

Let’s take an equity research analyst’s resume as example.

  • Built financial models to evaluate auto companies, and wrote reports on their stock price

  • Forecasted the US auto market’s sales to predict its profitability

Two typical work experience of an equity research analyst, right? Remember these two sentences and see how they evolve at the end.

1. Keyword Optimization

Nowadays, an increasing number of companies utilize AI and computers to perform an initial screening of candidate resumes, eliminating human involvement.

What are the primary criteria for these screens? Keywords.

The greater the number of keywords present in your resume that align with the job description, the higher your chances of passing the initial screen. This is where ChatGPT can be extremely helpful.

For instance, if you have already drafted bullet points and desire to rephrase them to incorporate keywords from the job description, you can do so with ChatGPT’s assistance.

Remember the two sentences I mentioned at the beginning? Let’s ask ChatGPT to rewrite them.

First, I store the entire job advertisement in ChatGPT.

Next, I ask ChatGPT to rewrite the two bullet points by adding keywords from the job descriptions and make it tailored to equity research work.

The two bullet points have been improved with added keywords from the job descriptions, making them more comprehensive and showing a quality upgrade. For example,

  • Changed “drafted report” to “authored a research report

  • Added “through extensive market trends, data and accounting analysis

  • Added “Bloomberg and Factset

  • Added “provide recommendations to internal and external stakeholders

However, it’s still far from perfect. While these modifications may increase your chances to passing basic initial screening, it may not be enough to impress advanced recruiters or clear more stringent evaluations.

It’s because they lack concrete numbers and specific achievements, and are somewhat lengthy. No need to hurry. Let’s improve them further in next step.

2. Work Achievement Descriptions

What sets a resume scoring 90 apart from one scoring 70? Achievements.

To effectively communicate your value to a potential employer, it’s crucial to highlight the impact you can bring to the company and the significance of your work. Simply listing your responsibilities falls short of making your resume stand out.

Please remember that resume writing is a storytelling process.

Nonetheless, emphasizing the impact of your work on a company is an aspect that is frequently overlooked. Fortunately, ChatGPT can assist by offering suggestions for showcasing your achievements, based on the information you provide.

Now, the two bullet points look more attractive and are likely to help you pass resume screenings, both by AI and experienced recruiters.

Of course, you can change the numbers that fit your case. Don’t exaggerate too much. Also, if you think they are too lengthy, you can ask ChatGPT to shorten them.

Remember the changes made to the original two bullet points? let’s recap.

Original

  • Built financial models to evaluate auto companies, and wrote reports on their stock price

  • Forecasted the US auto market’s sales to predict its profitability

New version with help from ChatGPT

  • Evaluated the US auto market’s sales, leveraging expertise, financial analysis, and tools like Bloomberg and FactSet, leading to a 70% accurate prediction of profitability, resulting in a 15% increase in market profits through recommended strategies by internal and external stakeholders.

See the difference? More importantly, I just do these changes in 3 minutes.

3. Summarization

Some people like to include a summary at the beginning of their resume to make it easier for recruiters or HR professionals to quickly grasp their background.

For me, I never do so since I’m an experienced worker and have too many things to include already. My resume does not have enough space for a summary.

However, it doesn’t imply that including a summary is useless. It could be beneficial for those with limited experience as it presents an opportunity to effectively highlight their qualifications in a concise manner. Also, it’s an effective way to fill the space of your resume.

With the help of ChatGPT, crafting an eye-catching and impactful summary is effortless and takes only a moment.

The summary generated by ChatGPT:

Highly skilled equity research analyst with a proven track record of designing and building financial models for multiple automotive companies, leading to a 20% increase in accuracy of stock price projections. Demonstrated expertise in evaluating the US automotive market’s sales, resulting in a 70% accurate prediction of profitability and a 15% increase in market profits through recommended strategies.

Of course, if you add more about your academic, work experience, extra-curricular activities and skillsets, ChatGPT can generate a more comprehensive and detailed summary.

Conclusion

In fact, ChatGPT can assist in many aspects during the resume writing process by providing well-structured and keyword-optimized content that highlights the candidate’s skills, achievements, and work experience.

Whether it’s summarizing a candidate’s work experience, refining bullet points, or generating eye-catching language, ChatGPT is a valuable tool for anyone looking to improve their chances of landing their dream job.
